Salt –N- Pepper
Sister Candace Howard
“Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God flavors of the earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste Godliness?” Matthew 5:13 Message Bible//Remix
If you grew up in the 70’s and 90’s like me, you must remember the greatest, all-time, all female rap group Salt-n-Pepa. Now they have gotten back together and have a reality TV show. It’s really an eye opener for those straddling the fence.
On the show Salt is saved, sanctified and filled with the Holy Spirit. But Pepa is still worldly, partying, drinking, wearing seductive clothes and chasing men. Salt doesn’t act the same since the last time they were together, and Pepa really doesn’t know how to handle or deal with the “new” Salt. No matter how hard Pepa tries to bring the world and fleshly things back into their relationships. Salt stands strong and firm to her faith and doesn’t back down.
It’s kind of ironic that the group’s name is Salt-n-Pepa and they are very similar to salt and pepper. Let’s look at the definitions for salt and pepper.
*salt n. –A substance for seasoning and preserving food; a compound produced by the combination of a base with acid; taste; savor – a. Impregnated with salt; pungent –vt. To sprinkle or season with salt.
*pepper n. –A plant and its aromatic pungent seed, much used in seasoning, etc – To sprinkle with pepper, to pelt with shot or missiles; to drub thoroughly.
Now they are different but still have something in common the word pungent which means: *caustic, keen, stinging
So this means that salt and pepper have the opportunity to make a lasting impression whenever they are used. But if you look back at the salt definition and the verb transitive of it is impregnated. That refers to all of us we are born with seasoning but it is up to us to sprinkle the right seasoning on others.
As I was writing this devotional I realized that Salt is sprinkling her Godliness on others by showing the world her God and no matter how many dollars, the lights, the cameras and the pressure of showbiz that God is bigger and that light has to always shine.
Now we all have some salt and pepper in us and must choose which to sprinkle and that is when we realize who created us and why we were created.
So when the lights, the cameras, lots of money, and fleshly things are put before you and you begin to sprinkle, what’s going to come out,
SALT OR PEPPER?
